Playoff fields set, Pandas and Dinos earn top seeds after round robin
Edmonton, AB – The schedule for Championship Sunday has been set, as the eight teams to qualify for the playoffs have emerged from a thrilling round robin at Saville Community Sports Centre.
The host Alberta Pandas secured the top seed on the women’s side of the championship, going a perfect 7-0 in round robin play. Alberta opened Saturday with a 9-4 win over Brandon, followed by a 4-3 extra-end win over Calgary, who they will meet in Sunday morning’s semifinal. The Dinos secured a 9-0 win over UBC to clinch the fourth and final playoff spot with a 4-3 record.
The other semifinal will see the defending champion Regina Cougars (6-1) take on the upstart UBCO Heat (4-3) in a rematch of the final draw of round-robin play. Regina led the Heat 3-0 after two ends, forcing handshakes after six ends thanks to a dominant performance.
Despite a thrilling 8-7 loss to UBC in Draw 9, the Calgary Dinos locked up the top seed on the men’s side with a 7-1 record. Calgary began their Saturday with a 6-5 win over the host Golden Bears, which saw skip Kenan Wipf draw a narrow port on the in-turn side to score one in the eighth. The Dinos will take on the 4-4 Victoria Vikes in tomorrow morning’s semifinal, with Victoria securing the last playoff spot thanks to an 8-3 win over TRU in the final draw.
Alberta (6-2) will take on Regina (7-1) in the other men’s semifinal in a rematch of the dramatic 6-4 Cougars win over the Bears in Draw 4. If either Regina team is to advance to Sunday afternoon’s final, a bronze medal match would be needed to determine the last entry for the U SPORTS Championship, hosted by the Cougars in February.
Sunday will see semifinals at 8:30 a.m., followed by medal matches at 1:00 p.m at Saville Centre. All games are streamed on the CurlingZone YouTube page.
