UBC, UVic lead after Day 1 at Victoria Rugby 7s Stop
Recap by University of Victoria Sports Information
VICTORIA, B.C. – The University of British Columbia and the University of Victoria led day one, going 3-0 at the second stop in the Canada West 7s series, February 7 at Wallace Field in Victoria.
Trinity Western University, University of Lethbridge, and the University of Alberta followed suit, tallying a 1-2 day. The University of Calgary rounded out the leaderboard with its 0-3 start to the tournament.
Ivy Poetker of the Victoria Vikes led day one in scoring as she found the try zone six times in Victoria's three wins. Jaime Dickson trailed the leader by only one try as she scored five tries, leading the Thunderbirds' scoring barrage.
The University of Lethbridge earned its first win of the season, taking down the University of Calgary in a back-and-forth defensive battle. The most exciting game of the day saw the Alberta Pandas’ Kate Alcock thread a game-winning conversion through the uprights to finish off Kaitlin Tetteh-Wayoe’s try, sealing a narrow 12-10 win over Lethbridge.
The five teams will return tomorrow for six more games at Wallace Field to decide who takes home the second tournament title of the Canada West 7s series.
