Winter Universiade: Canada vs. Russia for gold: Part II
GRANADA, Spain (CIS) – Canada’s women’s hockeyteam will shoot for its fourth gold medal in as many WinterUniversiade tournaments later today, but will do so against theonly team to have ever beaten them in FISU competition, Russia.

The contest will be a rematch of last Sunday’s Pool Bfinale where Russia (3-0) prevailed 3-1 to hand Canada (2-1) itsfirst-ever Universiade loss in women’s hockey, and also ofthe 2013 final in Trentino, Italy, where the Canucks scored aconvincing 5-0 win.
The Red and White is 23-1 overall since women’s hockeymade its FISU Games debut in 2009.
Canada advanced to the gold medal final thanks to a 5-2 victoryover Japan (3-1) in Wednesday’s semifinal. Alternate captainMorgan McHaffie (Guelph, Ont.) of the Queen’s UniversityGaels notched a pair of goals in the victory and has a team-leadingthree goals in three games heading into the final.
Also scoring for Canada were defenceman Julie Flinton (WilliamsLake, B.C.) of the University of Saskatchewan, StFX forward AlexNormore (Bedford, N.S) and University of Alberta forward TessHouston (Winnipeg), who picked up the game-winner by scoring on ashorthanded breakaway.
The Russians, however, are bolstered by an offence that countsfour of the top five Universiade scoring leaders among its ranks,including CIS leading scorer Iya Gavrilova of the University ofCalgary, who has 10 points in three games. Gavrilova is one ofeight Olympians on the Russian roster.
NOTES: In previous Universiade gold medalfinals, the Canadians defeated China 3-1 (2009), Finland 4-1 (2011)and Russia 5-0 (2013)... Four members of the 2015 team return fromthe 2013 championship squad, including goaltender ÉlodieRousseau-Sirois from the University of Montreal, defencemanBrittney Fouracres from McGill, as well as forwards Laura Brookerfrom Wilfrid Laurier and Alex Normore from StFX.

About theWinter Universiade
The Winter Universiade is a biennial international multi-sportevent open to competitors who are at least 17 and less than 28years of age as of January 1 in the year of the Games. Participantsmust be full-time students at a post-secondary institution(university, college, CEGEP) or have graduated from apost-secondary institution in the year preceding the event.
The Granada Universiade will feature nine compulsory sports andone optional sport. Compulsory sports: alpine skiing, biathlon, icehockey, curling, nordic skiing, short track speed skating, figureskating, synchronized skating, snowboarding. Optional sport:freestyle skiing.
NOTE: Biathlon and nordic skiing will take place in StrbskePleso and Osrblie, Slovakia from Jan. 24 to Feb. 1, prior to thestart of the Games in Granada.
