WBB: Huge Wesmen victory sends Winnipeg to Final Four
March 6, 2022
The University of Winnipeg Wesmen upset the University of Fraser Valley Cascades tonight, 69-75, in the final quarter-final game of the CW women's basketball playoffs.
Tonight's victory marked a huge upset for the sixth ranked Wesmen over the number three ranked Cascades.
For UFV, Maddy Gobeil was their saving grace, putting up the tournament high of 31 points, and having multiple career highs on the stats sheet. Gobeil made six from three and 11 from the field, shooting an astonishing 58 per cent overall.
"This season was a lot of fun for our team. We've been together for a while now with the covid season and everything so, we have a lot of good memories and a lot of good times on and off the court," said Gobeil, Fraser Valley's player of the game. "It's been a good year, it's tough to end it like this but, we're happy with this season all together."
Gobeil, the second-year guard, made five rebounds tonight, second to Victoria Jacobse. Jacobse is rightfully the captain for the Cascades, grabbing 12 rebounds on behalf of Fraser Valley, while first-year teammate Julia Tuchscherer had four with 16 points.
Unfortunately UFV were unable to catch the unstoppable force that was the Wesmen, with Kyanna Giles being named player of the game for the second time this weekend.
"It felt great, just coming in and I was kind of nervous for this game, because UFV is a really good team. Maddy [Gobeil], 31 points is amazing," said Giles. "We just need to play our game, play good defence and defend the three, and I think we did overall a good job."
Giles added 24 to the scoreboard tonight, shooting 43 per cent from three, on top of her already impressive eight rebounds and four assists on the floor.
"Just being a vet and playing in the U SPORTS now for my fifth year, I just know what it takes and once it's big games I have to step up and that's what I did."
In the post for Winnipeg was Keylyn Filewich, a necessity under the post. Filewich is a known threat in the west after having two appearances in the top 10 ranking for Canada West women's basketball players. She ranked fifth overall in scoring as well as fourth in rebounding this season, while Giles finished ninth in steals and rebounds, seventh in scoring and first overall in assists.
This powerhouse squad will now head to Saskatoon, Sask., for the Final Four on March 18, 2022. The Wesmen will be meeting Regina for the fifth time this season after winning their past four match-ups.
The winner of the WPG and REG game will move on to the CW championship game and earn a spot at the national championship in Kingston, Ont., hosted by Queen's University.
