WBB: Wesmen top preseason poll

VANCOUVER - As Canada West women's basketball gets set to make its return to the court this weekend, the Winnipeg Wesmen are the early favourites to win the conference title.

The conference released its annual coaches preseason poll Thursday, as teams ready to start the 2021-22 regular season.

Winnipeg picked up 14 of a possible 16 first-place votes and finished atop the poll with 252 total points.

The defending conference and national champion Saskatchewan Huskies came in second with 227 points. The Fraser Valley Cascades received one first-place vote and finished third in the poll with 219 points with the Calgary Dinos right behind them with 217 points and a pair of first-place selections.

The road to the conference championships begins tonight, with the UBC Thunderbirds hosting the Trinity Western Spartans. On Friday, 14 more teams get their seasons underway with a full slate of conference action available live on Canada West TV Presented by Co-op. It has been a long path back to the court for fourth-year forward Emma Kary, after an injury-plagued 2019/20 season, before the cancellation of the 2020/21 season.

Kary led the 2018/19 Pandas in scoring and rebounding, at 17.2 PPG and 7.7 RPG respectively. She was also third on the team in assists and steals, making her a true two-way star - a label recognized by Canada West, as she was a 2^nd team CW All-Star.

This Pandas enter the 2021/22 season having had the 4^th best offense in 2019/20. Head coach Scott Edwards figures to lean heavily on his veteran star, especially considering leading scorer Vanessa Wild has graduated from the program.

An offensive weapon in the Bisons backcourt, fourth-year guard Taylor Randall has continued to improve each year at the university level.

Last season, the three-time Canada West Third Team All-Star (2017-18; 2018-19; 2019-20) finished sixth in the conference with a career-best 17.6 points per game, shooting 33.1% from three and 37.8% from the field. Her ability to get to the free throw line is also valued on the Bisons, as she got there for 58 attempts in 2019-20, making 86.2%.

The Dundas, Ontario native continues studies in the Asper School of Business this year.

One of the best defenders in Canada West, the Moscow product has taken a step forward offensively every season, averaging 14.5 points per game last season. With the departures of CW all-stars Maria Mongomo and Madison Landry, Shakirova will be crucial to the UNBC attack this season.
