MVB: 2021-22 Season Preview
VANCOUVER - The Canada West men's volleyball schedule kicks into full gear this weekend as 10 teams are set to open their 2021-22 seasons.
The Manitoba Bisons and Winnipeg Wesmen get Week 2 action underway as the crosstown rivals square off on Thursday night. The Wesmen already have a pair of games under their belt this season after splitting a pair of matches (3-1, 2-3) with the Brandon Bobcats last weekend.
Two more local matchups are featured this week, with the MacEwan Griffins hosting the Alberta Golden Bears, and the Mount Royal Cougars visiting the Calgary Dinos. The Bobcats are also back in action again this weekend, hosting the Saskatchewan Huskies.
In the West Divisionthe reigning conference champion Trinity Western Spartans squad will host the Thompson Rivers WolfPack, while the UBC Okanagan Heat will welcome in the Fraser Valley Cascades. The Cascades will make their long awaited Canada West debut against the UBC Okanagan Heatafter being approved as CW members for the cancelled 2020-21 season in May of 2019.

With this 2021/22 iteration of the Golden Bears volleyball squad, fifth-year setter Max Elgert will be integral to reaching the heights this team has seen in recent memory. He paced the 19/20 Bears in digs, aces, and assists, leading Canada West with 786 assists.
He was selected as a first team Canada West All-Star 2020, before being chosen as the Wilson Challenge Trophy winner as the top Male Athlete at the University of Alberta.
Head coach Brock Davidiuk will need his returnees, like Elgert, to be elite if the Bears are to challenge for not only a conference title, but perhaps even a medal position at the U SPORTS Championship.

As they embark on their inaugural Canada West season, the Cascades are led by a standout attacker in Benne who has had significant success in the league. In 2019-20, the high-flying left side was voted the CW rookie of the year in recognition of his standout campaign with the Thompson Rivers WolfPack. Benne finished fourth in CW in kills (265), and was also among the conference leaders in kills per set (3.23, ninth), total digs (131, ninth), digs per set (1.60, 12th) and in hitting percentage (.254, 12th).

After leading the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference's North Division in kills with 287 for Lakeland College during the 2018-19 season, Walisser transferred to MacEwan, but decided to redshirt his first season with the Griffins (2019-20).
His dedication in the gym and classroom during that year and over the pandemic lost season of 2020-21 has positioned him well to make a big impact at the Canada West level this season.
Walisser is a veteran 6-foot-5 outside who brings big offence, can block and be physical at the net, and also posseses a strong passing game, honed even further since his time at MacEwan.

Having spent his first two U SPORTS seasons working beside one of the most prolific hitters in program history in Kevin Negus, left side Ben Carleton is ready for the spotlight in his junior year with Manitoba.
The Brisbane, Australia native got on the court as a true freshman in 2018-19 and has honed his game since. In 2019-20, Carleton averaged 1.91 kills per set (31st in Canada West), with 12 total service aces and a .129 hitting percentage.
This season, those numbers should shoot up as he becomes the team's main attacking option on the outside. The 6'6", 215-pound hitter is studying in the Faculty of Engineering.

The men's volleyball team has strong expectations of their performance along with high potential this season. With the knowledge and power to make a push for Canada West playoffs and potentially Nationals, the men's volleyball program is excited to see how things shake out in their division given the talent in their pool.

After Dylan Mortenson's 2019-20 campaign was cut short due to injury, the 6-8 Swift Current, Sask. native, who is one of the best outside hitters in the nation, is back in the fold for Saskatchewan. In his last full season of play, Mortenson recorded 326 kills during the 2018-19 campaign, leading the Huskies to an appearance in the Canada West quarter-final and earning Canada West Second-Team All Star Status along the way. The 2018 U SPORTS Rookie of the Year will be counted upon heavily from the Huskies in their pursuit for a third-consecutive postseason appearance.

After leading Canada West in assists per set in 2019-20 (10.29), Epp returns this fall with the goal of leading the defending Canada West and U SPORTS champions back to the top. The TWU setter guided the Spartans to a conference-leading .380 hitting percentage in 2019-20 and will look to do so again with a variety of attacking options, including the likes of returning veterans Jesse Elser, Brodie Hofer and Jackson Howe. The last time, Canada West saw Epp in action was in the Canada West final in 2019-20, when he led the Spartans to a three-set win on home court to capture TWU's sixth conference crown.
