SCHEERHOORN, SCHRIEMER LEAD CANADA TO U21 NORCECA SILVER
LANGLEY, British Columbia – TrinityWestern opposite Blake Scheerhoorn (Belleville, Ont.) and setterAdam Schriemer (Winnipeg) helped Canada’s men’s juniornational team earn a silver medal at the U21 NORCECA (North andCentral America and Caribbean) Championship in San Salvador, ElSalvador and, in doing so, earned the Canadian side a spot in nextyear’s FIVB U21 World Championship.
Canada lost to Cuba in a hard-fought three-set gold medal match,falling 29-27, 25-21, 25-21, but with the top two teams in thetournament claiming berths in the 2015 championships,Canada’s silver medal was good enough to book a spot in nextyear’s event.
The Canadians locked up a spot in both the NORCECA gold medalmatch and next year’s world championship after upsetting thetwo-time defending NORCECA champion United States in the semifinalswith a comeback five-set, 23-25, 25-14, 20-25, 25-22, 15-9,victory.
Scheerhoorn finished the tournament with 31 points, including 24kills, five blocks and two aces. Schriemer started 12 of 16 setsfor Canada and finished sixth in the tournament with an average3.00 running sets per set.
In the gold medal game, Scheerhoorn had a team-high 11 points,including eight kills, two blocks and one ace. Schriemer startedthe first two sets for Canada and finished with five running setsand 21 still sets.
For Canada, it is the fourth time in a row it has finishedsecond at the biannual U21 NORCECA championship. Canada lost to theAmericans in the championship final in both 2010 and 2012 and toCuba in 2008.
Both Scheerhoorn and Schriemer will enter their second yearswith TWU this fall. Last year, Schriemer was named both the CanadaWest and CIS Rookie of the Year.
