76 Huskie student-athletes have been selected in the history of the CFL Draft, as Dayton Black, Daniel Perry, Charlie Ringland, and Caleb Morin, were selected in the 2023 CFL Draft. Tuesday night's saw the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, B.C. Lions, and Ottawa Redblacks draft two receivers, one defensive back, and one offensive lineman from the Huskies.
FIRST ROUND
Saskatchewan offensive lineman Dayton Black was the sixth overall pick in last night's draft, being selected by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in round one. From Brandon, MB, Black was a record-setting quarterback while in high-school and is fairly new to the position of offensive tackle. At 6'5" and 298 pounds, Black has made his mark on the Huskie offensive line, starting all games in the 2022 U SPORTS season, and helping the team advance to its second straight Vanier Cup.
FIFTH ROUND
Moving on to the fifth round, the Ottawa Redblacks selected receiver Daniel Perry as the 37th overall pick in the draft. Perry ran a 4.58 second forty-yard dash and a 4.32 second shuttle at the CFL Combine, impressing scouts. In the 2022 U SPORTS season, Perry was Saskatchewan's only First Team U SPORTS All-Canadian, and a Canada West All-Star, with 41 catches for 602 yards and two touchdowns.
After an impressive CFL Combine performance (4.59 second forty-yard dash, 4.18 second shuttle, 10'5" broad jump, 40-inch vertical jump), defensive back Charlie Ringland emerged as one of the top recruits at the Combine. An injury during the latter portion of the Combine will keep Ringland on the sidelines for the 2023 season, but that did not deter the B.C. Lions, who drafted Ringland 43rd overall.
EIGHTH ROUND
A key component of the Huskies receivers' group, Caleb Morin was selected 67th overall in the 2023 CFL Draft. Morin's performance at the CFL Combine had him leading receivers in the shuttle, with a time of 7.00 seconds. During the 2022 U SPORTS season, Morin had eight games with 50+ yards receiving, including four games with nearly 100 receiving yards.
