Hetlinger, Hurford power Bears to win over Bisons
September 10, 2022
An explosive second quarter, one in which the Golden Bears outscored the Manitoba Bisons 24-0, was enough to power Alberta to a 34-11 win over the Bisons on Friday night at Foote Field.
Bears QB Eli Hetlinger and receiver Kolby Hurford connected for a trio of massive touchdown's on Friday, including TD connections of 34 and 68 yards in the second quarter alone. The duo also added a 84-yard TD strike in the third, with Hurford finishing the game with four receptions for 202 yards and three majors.
Hetlinger finished his second career start with 352 yards on 19/28 passing, adding 21 yards and a touchdown rushing. Chevy Thomas led the Bears with seven receptions, while Ope Oshinubi led the ground attack with 66 yards on nine carries.
In a complete performance, the Bears defence also forced three turnovers, allowing just 360 offensive yards from the Bisons. Reiss Flunder led Alberta with eight tackles, including two for a loss, while Jonathan Giustini and Charlie De Land recorded interceptions.
Des Catellier managed just 57 yards on 5/13 passing, throwing one interception before being pulled at half. Jackson Tachinski threw for 134 yards in relief for a Bisons offence that was stagnant all night.
After a low-key first quarter, the Bears offence woke up in the second, following a muffed punt return from Manitoba. It led to the first of two Hurford TD's in the quarter, as Alberta took a 24-2 lead into the break.
Alberta scored 34 unanswered points in the second and third, with Giustini also connecting on a 22-yard field goal in addition to Hurford's 84-yard TD reception in the third.
Manitoba finally recorded a major score in the fourth quarter, by virtue of a Tachinski TD strike to Brendt Adams, well after the game was well out of reach.
The Bears (1-1) will travel to Calgary next weekend to take on the 0-2 Dinos, while Manitoba, now 0-2, will host the 1-1 UBC Thunderbirds.
