CALGARY - The University of Saskatchewan Huskies were hosted by the Mount Royal University Cougars at the Flames Community Arena to open their weekend. The Huskies took it in a shootout, 2-1.
The final shot count was 36-29 in favour of the Huskies. Saskatchewan’s goalie Taran Kozun stopped 28 shots on net while Cougars’ Wyatt Hoflin blocked 34.
Forward Carson Stadnyk of the Huskies set the pace for his team with six shots on net. Cougars’ Jamal Watson found five opportunities of his own on the net, followed closely by defenceman Taylor Green.
The first period was an immediate struggle for control. After seven minutes of play, the Cougars found an advantage for Connor Chartier to score his eighth goal of the season. Tyson Helgesen and Sean Richards lined up the play, quickly passing to Chartier. He wrapped around the net and shot it past Huskies’ Kozun.
Second period was rife with tension as the two team tried to maneuver around the other’s defences. Both sides found two powerplays each, but were unable to make any of the shots on net count.
Saskatchewan found their advantage in the third period as forward Logan McVeigh shot past Hoflin to score his third of the season. Collin Shirley and Sam Ruopp set him up for the goal after a quick play.
The game snuck into overtime as the two teams were unable to shake each others’ defences. Finally, they entered a shootout to square off against the goalies. For the Cougars, Connor Rankin and Andrew Fyten each scored a goal. The Huskies’ Collin Shirley and Jared Dmytriw also found the net. The Huskies’ Levi Cable swept past Hoflin to take the final goal of the night.
The two teams will play once more for this year on Saturday, November 30, at Flames Community Arena. It will be broadcasted live on CanadaWest.tv, presented by Co-op.
