REGINA - Chris Gerrie scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal and assisted on two others as No. 10-ranked Mount Royal held on for a 5-3 win over Regina on Saturday afternoon at The Co-operators Centre.
Gerrie's goal came right in the middle of a wild opening 39 seconds of the third period which saw the two teams score three times.
Arthur Miller had opened the third-period scoring just seven seconds in after knocking home a rebound following a Brennan Riddle shot. Gerrie's goal came 12 seconds after Miller's, and only 20 seconds later Regina's Turner Ripplinger scored his first Canada West goal with a rifle of a shot from the high slot.
When the dust settled after that flurry, Mount Royal led 4-3 and the score stayed that way until a late empty-net goal sealed the win for the visitors.
Playing in his first game of the season after being injured to start the year, Mount Royal defenceman Taylor Green matched Gerrie with a goal and two helpers. Sean Richards, Andrew Fyten, and Keegan Iverson also scored for MRU, while Tanner Campbell had Regina's first goal of the night before Miller and Ripplinger scored in the third.
Riley Morris made 17 saves for Mount Royal, helping the Cougars improve to 6-2-0 on the season.
Brandon Holtby was called upon to make 31 saves for the U of R, 28 of which came in the opening two periods alone. Regina (1-7-0) will have next weekend off before returning to action for two home games against Manitoba on Nov. 8 and Nov. 9.
Mount Royal also has next weekend off. Their next games will be a home-and-home against Lethbridge on Nov. 8 and Nov. 9.
