Canada West mourns the passing of Val Schneider
It is with great sadness that Canada West mourns the passing of former Executive Director, Val Schneider.
A lifelong contributor to university sport, Val’s impact as an athlete, coach, and administrator left an enduring legacy across the conference and beyond.
As a student-athlete, Val was a four-time all-star with the Alberta Golden Bears football team and a key member of the program’s first Vanier Cup championship in 1967, earning MVP honours in the title game.
He joined the University of Saskatchewan’s Faculty of Physical Education in 1973, where he spent 28 years serving as head coach of the Huskies football team and later as Athletic Director from 1980 to 1991.
Val went on to serve as an Executive Member at Large beginning in 1995 before leading Canada West as Executive Director until his retirement in 2012.
A true Canada West legend, Val was fittingly the first inductee into the Canada West Hall of Fame in 2019.
The entire Canada West family extends our heartfelt condolences to Val’s family, friends, and loved ones.
