Cougars Complete Weekend Sweep Over Wesmen

The Mount Royal University Cougars completed their regular season schedule with a 3-0 (25-16, 25-22, 25-12) victory over the University of Winnipeg Wesmen Saturday evening in Winnipeg.

With the win the Cougars finish regular season action with a 12-12 record. Mount Royal finishes the season in 7th spot and have qualified for the post season. The Wesmen finish the season with a record of 2-22.

Fifth year outside hitter Robyn Potolicki led the Cougars with 12 kills, five service aces and also added 10 digs. Taylor Pelland added eight kills. Maddi Quinn led the team with 18 defensive digs.

Danika Picklyk, Alex Rose, Karissa Kuhr and Maria Colvin each had six kills to lead the Wesmen. Jessica Friesen led the team with nine digs.

The teams exchanged points in the opening set to 10-10 but soon after the Cougars went on a 6-1 run to open up an 18-11 lead. Three kills down the stretch by Mount Royal gave the visitors the first set 25-16.

Winnipeg regrouped in the early stages of the second set, racing out to a 12-4 lead. Mount Royal fought right back outscoring the Wesmen 12-4 to tie the score at 16-16. Three kills by Potolicki helped the Cougars close out the set by a score of 25-22.

In the third set the Cougars jumped out to a 7-3 lead but a determined Wesmen team came back to tie the score at 8-8. A 10-0 run by the Cougars put them comfortably ahead 18-8 before eventually closing out the set 25-12.
