Spartans Defeat Wesmen In Straight Sets To Sweep Weekend Series

The No. 3 ranked Trinity Western University Spartans completed a weekend sweep over the University of Winnipeg Wesmen with a straight sets (25-16, 25-21, 25-17) Saturday evening at the Dr. David F. Anderson gymnasium in Winnipeg.

Trinity Western (19-3) began weekend play with a 3-0 victory over the Wesmen (2-20) on Friday night.

Sophie Carpentier once again led the Spartans attack finishing with a match high 11 kills. Ashtyn McKenzie followed with eight kills. Setter Nikki Cornwall compiled 35 assists and three blocks.

Danika Picklyk led the Wesmen with six kills followed by Alex Rose with five. Madison Fyvie finished with a match high 10 digs.

Winnipeg stayed within range of the Spartans in the opening set trailing 10-6 early on. The Spartans found their game going on an 8-1 run to open up an 18-7 lead. The Spartans eventually went on to win the first set 25-16.

The Wesmen jumped to the early lead in the second set (3-2) thanks in part to a pair of kills by Karissa Kuhr. A 5-0 run by the Spartans followed by four unanswered points gave the Spartans a 14-6 lead at the midway point of the set. Winnipeg made the set interesting soon after. Three kills by Maria Colvin combined with a pair of Spartan attacking errors cut the lead to 21-17. Trinity Western regrouped and went on to win the second set 25-21.

The Spartans held the lead in the third at the technical break, 16-11 before going on to close out the match with a 25-17 set win.

The Spartans will take on the Manitoba Bisons at home next weekend. Winnipeg will close out their regular season entertaining the Mount Royal University Cougars.
