Spartans Upend Wesmen To Start Weekend Series

Fifth year outside hitter Sophie Carpentier led the No. 3 ranked Trinity Western University Spartans to a 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-22) victory Friday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

The 6'2"Carpentier had 17 kills and a hitting percentage of .464. She also had seven digs and two blocks. Fifth year outside hitter Elizabeth Wendel added nine kills. Setter Nikki Cornwall had 34 assists and a team high nine digs.

Alex Rose led Winnipeg with seven kills. Danika Picklyk, Karissa Kuhr and Maria Colvin each had six. Picklyk had a match high 11 defensive digs.

The win improves the Spartans record to 18-3. Winnipeg with the loss falls to 2-19 on the season.

The first set started out an even affair with the score tied at 8-8 in the early stages. Trinity Western outscored the Wes men 8-4 to take a 16-12 lead at the technical timeout. The Spartans would eventually go on to win the set 25-15.

The Spartans had the early momentum in the second set leading 16-12 at the break. Winnipeg cut the lead to three at 18-15 but the Spartans closed out the set on a 7-1 run to win the set 25-16, the final point coming on a kill by Carpentier.

Set number three was a close one with the Wes men giving the Spartans everything they had. A block by Carpentier gave the Spartans a 15-11 lead until the Wesmen reeled off four straight points to tie the score at 15-15. Winnipeg stayed in range with the Spartans later on at 18-18 but the Spartans were able to close out the match winning the third set 25-22.

The teams will meet Saturday in the later match with a 7:30 start scheduled.
