SASKATOON – The No. 1 ranked University of Alberta Pandas remained perfect in the 2016-17 women's volleyball season with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-15, 25-18) win over the University of Saskatchewan Huskies Friday night at the PAC in Saskatoon.
With the win, the No. 1 ranked Pandas sit at 13-0. Saskatchewan drops to 5-8 with the loss.
Meg Casault led the Pandas with nine kills, followed by Vanessa Jarman and Shauny Hogg with six. Eryn Orysiuk led Alberta defensively with 12 digs. Kacey Otto added another 10 digs.
Emmalyn Copping led the Huskies with nine kills on the other side of the net. Taylor Annala tallied another six kills, while setter Mackenzie Pek recorded a team-high eight digs and 23 assists.
Saskatchewan had the lead early in the first set until the Pandas took a 9-8 lead on a block by Hogg and Mariah Walsh. Alberta went on an 8-3 run in the set to take a large 19-13 lead. Saskatchewan couldn't recover and an Otto service ace ended the set 25-17.
The Huskies led 12-9 in the second set before a Walsh service run scored the Pandas 10 straight points. Another Otto ace ended the set 25-15.
Like the middle set, the Pandas grew a large lead on the Huskies reaching the technical timeout on a Hogg ace. The Huskies played strong pulling within three twice, but Alberta's Otto ended the match on an attack the Huskies' couldn't dig up.
The two teams will battle again Saturday night on Ron & Jane Graham Court at the PAC. First serve is slated for 6 p.m.
