REGINA, Sask. – Mount Royal took convincing wins in the opening two sets and held off the University of Regina in the third for a three-set sweep on Friday night in a Canada West women's volleyball match at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
MRU hit .379 as a team in a 25-10 win in the first set before taking a commanding lead in the match with a 25-14 win in the second as they held the hometown Cougars to a negative hitting percentage in both of the first two sets.
It looked like Mount Royal might roll to another big win in the final set after building up a 20-12 lead, but the U of R went on separate 4-0 runs to get back to within two points in the late going. But that was as close as Regina would come, as Kylie Willis put down her sixth kill of the night to give MRU a 25-22 win and its fifth Canada West win of the season.
Robyn Potolicki led Mount Royal (5-6) offensively, collecting a match-high 11 kills and hitting .526 in the win. Potolicki also had eight digs, just one behind Taylor Pelland and Maddi Quinn who tied for the team lead with nine. Alex Donaghy added eight kills and hit .436 for MRU, while Pelland chipped in with seven kills.
Veteran setter Amy Gordon had 27 assists for Mount Royal while controlling an offence which hit a season-best .270 during the match.
Diana Lumbala (pictured) had her best match in a University of Regina uniform, matching her career high with nine kills and adding nine digs as she flirted with her first Canada West double-double. Lumbala also led all players with a blistering .533 hitting percentage and tied Willis for the match lead with three blocks. Taylor Ungar led all players with 10 digs for the Cougars (0-11).
The two teams will meet again on Saturday night at the CKHS. First serve is set for 5 p.m.
