CALGARY - The Dinos travelled to Mount Royal on Saturday night. The Cougars came out attacking early on in the first set. After a Brianna Solberg service error, Mount Royal built a comfortable lead with some impressive kills. The Dinos were not happy with the start, calling their first timeout after a Robyn Potolicki kill made it 5-0 for the Cougars.
The Dinos stormed back in the first set tying up the game at 12 with four consecutive points.
The rest of the set contained some exciting volleyball, but neither team could separate themselves from the other. Both teams playing with increased intensity as the set went on.
The back and forth battle continued until the Dinos built a 2-point lead at just the right time, making the score 24-22, forcing an MRU timeout before the set point. Two quick Cougar kills later, and the Cougars tied it up at 24. The Dinos called a timeout to settle down the squad.
After the timeout, a Dino attack error gave Mount Royal an opportunity to steal the set. The Cougars failed to take advantage of the opportunity. The Dinos earned the next three points and a victory in set one, 27-25.
The second set started where the first one left off with some great rallies back and forth. Neither team could pull ahead. Finally, Mount Royal went on a 7-2 run that resulted in their biggest lead of the set, 19-16. The Dino's sensed the Cougar's putting things together and took a timeout.
With the score 21-19, Mount Royal stole a point from the Dinos after a couple of outstanding digs by Potolicki and Alex Donaghy. The rally made the score 22-19 and Mount Royal took care of business from there on. The final score of the second set was 25-22.
The third set was a series of impressive runs by both teams. Mount Royal opened up the set favourably once again as they gained a 3-0 lead on the Dinos. The Dinos responded by stepping their game up and building a 21-13 lead, their biggest of the set. But, after a 4-0 Cougar run, the Dinos lead started shrinking.
The Dinos managed to hold on the rest of the way. The third set finished with a score of 25-20.
In the fourth set, Leah Shevkenek of Calgary had the Dinos in front early with a couple of service aces to give her team a lead. The wouldn't give up that lead for the entirety of the fourth set.
The Dino's dominated the rest of the way while cruising to win the set by a score of 25-15, sealing them a 3-1 match victory.
Mount Royal drops down to .500 with their fourth loss of the season, making their record 4-4. Meanwhile, the University of Calgary adds onto their impressive record thus far in the season and sit at 10-1.
