Winnipeg, MB – The University of Manitoba Bisons women's volleyball team fell to the #1 University of Alberta Pandas by a score of 3-0 (12-25,14-25, 22-25) at the Investors Group Athletic Centre on Saturday, November 19. Manitoba loss comes just a day removed from their 3-1 loss to Alberta.
With the loss, Manitoba loses their fourth consecutive game, falling to 2-6, while Alberta improves to 6-0 in Canada West conference play.
The number one ranked visitors controlled the majority of the contest, and made quick work of the Herd. Alberta was able to slam down 40 kills, while the home side was only able to hit 24. A positive note that Manitoba can take from this match, was that they were much better and very competitive in the final set.
In the final set, Manitoba came out with a lot more energy, this time only being out killed by two. The Herd held a 22-20 lead, before giving up five straight points and falling 25-22 in the final set, and consequently losing the game. Kacey Otto won the final set for the visitors on one of the teams six service ace's.
"I think we realized we played with an energy you have to play with at this level" Bisons head coach Jon Hykawy said. "I was happy with the energy we had in the third set, and if we win that set who knows what happens."
The Herd opened the second set with their first lead of the game, via a kill by Kearley Abbott. But that was the only time they would hold the lead in the half, as the visitors won the set 25-14. Manitoba closed the gap in kills in the second set, only being out killed 13 to eight. Haille Bujan led the Bisons in kills, slamming down four within the set, Shauny Hogg also had four slams for the visiting side.
The Pandas took an early 2-0 lead on kills by Karly Janssen and Jessica Hoskins, and never gave up the lead in the opening frame. Alberta had a 13 total kills, compared to the Bisons four, leading to their 25-12 first set win.
Haille Bujan led the home side with 6 kills, and Kacey Otto led the Pandas with 9.
The Bisons are on their conference by during the November 25-26 weekend, while Alberta will play host to the Winnipeg Wesmen on Nov. 25-26. The Herd will be back in action on December 2.
