Saskatchewan completes weekend sweep with win over U of R

REGINA, Sask. – The Saskatchewan Huskies completed a weekend sweep with a three-set win over the Regina Cougars on Saturday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

Saskatchewan opened up the match with a 25-19 in the first, then outlasted the Cougars for a 25-23 win in a second set that featured eight tie scores and three lead changes. Regina had a late 23-22 lead in the second, but the Huskies got three consecutive points off kills by Sabrina Balisky and Taylor Annala and a set-ending block by Balisky and Emily Humbert.

The Huskies (4-2) led from wire to wire in the third, hitting .448 as a team in a 25-13 win.

Emmalyn Copping led Saskatchewan in kills for the second consecutive night, leading all players with 12. Humbert and Balisky had four blocks apiece and finished with impressive hitting percentages for the Huskies, as Humbert had seven kills and hit .545 and Balisky put down six kills and hit at a .417 clip. Mackenzie Pek had 27 assists and tied Annala for the team high with eight digs, while Annala chipped in offensively with eight kills.

Third-year libero Taylor Ungar continued her strong start to the season for the Cougars, finishing with 12 digs to lead all players. Kathleen Bruce had a team-high six kills, while Emma Matheson added four kills, tied for the match high with four blocks, and hit for a .333 percentage.

The Cougars (0-6) will be right back at home next weekend with a pair of matches against a UBC Okanagan team that's currently ranked No. 2 in the nation, while Saskatchewan is also at home for two conference matches against Brandon.
