Big first half gives Huskies Game 1 victory over Cascades

SASKATOON – A big first half in Game 1 of a Canada West quarter-final series led the No. 8 ranked University of Saskatchewan Huskies to a 78-55 win over the University of Fraser Valley Cascades Thursday night on Ron & Jane Graham Court at the PAC in Saskatoon. 

With the Cascades ahead 18-15 in the first quarter, Saskatchewan finished frame on a 10-0 run to lead 25-18.  

The Huskies continued the pace scoring the first nine points in the second quarter. It was a tough quarter for Fraser Valley. The Cascades were outscored 21-9 and didn't score until the five-minute mark. In the Huskies 9-0 run to start the second quarter, Fraser Valley missed three layups in a row and had five turnovers.

Saskatchewan led 46-27 at halftime.

Fraser Valley was able to slow down the Huskies' offence in the second half, but couldn't fully get back in the game. Saskatchewan led 64-40 after the third. The Cascades outscored the Huskies 15-14 in the final quarter.

Sabine Dukate led the Huskies with 21 points in the game, while Madeline Humbert added another 10 from the bench. Megan Ahlstrom and Summer Masikewich each added another nine points. Masikewich led the Huskies on the boards nabbing eight rebounds. 

Shayna Litman and Kayli Sartori combined for 41 of the Cascades' 55 points in the game scoring 21 and 20 respectively. Litman also recorded eight rebounds. 

Fraser Valley finished shooting at 40% in the game, but had trouble finding the net from the three-point line going 0-for-7 from the arc. Saskatchewan shot at 43.8% and hit 10 baskets from from the three-point arc. 

Tipoff on Game 2 is at 6:30 p.m. Friday night, while Game 3, if needed, will be played Saturday at 2 p.m.
