REGINA, Sask. - The University of Regina's women's basketball team closed out Canada West play with a 76-36 win over Thompson Rivers on Saturday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

The Cougars used an 18-2 run in the first half to pull away from TRU and never looked back, building up a 19-point lead at halftime and scoring on each of their first three possessions of the third quarter to continue that momentum after the break.

Regina (17-3) can still finish first, second, or third in the Canada West RPI rankings pending the results of the rest of Saturday's action across the league. The conference will award the top 12 teams a playoff spot based on wins and losses, but will then seed those 12 squads by RPI.

Kyanna Giles finished with 15 points and eight rebounds for the Cougars, while Katie Polischuk added 10 points on Senior Night. Christina McCusker added nine points and a game-high nine rebounds, while Sara Hubenig also scored nine and Caitlin Zacharias finished with seven.

Thompson Rivers (2-18) was led by Emily Vilac's 10 points.

After Regina's 74-36 win on Friday, Thompson Rivers played the Cougars even through the first half of the first quarter. The WolfPack hit triples on their first two possessions of the game, as Kanesha Reeves and Leilani Carney both hit from outside in the opening 75 seconds. Reeves hit another triple as TRU led 9-8 five minutes into the opening period, but the Cougars finished the first quarter on a 12-2 run to take an 18-11 lead into the second.

The second quarter saw the Cougars extend that lead as they held TRU to just five points in the period. A layup by Giles and a triple by Britton Belyk on back-to-back possessions finished off a 9-2 run, and Zacharias hit a bucket in the final minute to put the U of R up 35-16.  After the break, buckets on back-to-back possessions by Giles and one by Polischuk on the next one put Regina up by 25. The Cougars again allowed single digits in points in the fourth, surrendering just seven to the WolfPack.

The Cougars will receive a bye through the first round of the Canada West playoffs and will be back in action at the CKHS for a best-of-three conference quarterfinal series beginning on Thursday, Feb. 23.
