BRANDON – The Brandon Bobcats picked up a win and weekend sweep over the MacEwan Griffins with a 61-53 victory Saturday evening.
The win moves Brandon's record to .500 and ties the team's previous best for wins in a season since joining the Canada West conference.
The Bobcats now sit with a record of 7-7, the same number of wins they had last season when the 'Cats finished with a record of 7-13.
On Saturday the Bobcats started the game on a 7-0 run, punctuated by a Mikaela Stanton three-pointer. The Bobcats extended their lead to 11-2 in the first three and a half minutes, and that would be the difference as MacEwan hung around but couldn't mount a run of their own.
Amy Williams' 15 first-half points proved to be a difference as well, as the fourth-year forward finished with a double-double (20 points, 10 rebounds) and led BU in scoring.
The Griffins moved the ball well in the second half to stay in the game, reducing Brandon's lead to six at 38-32, but six points would be the closest MacEwan would get, as Brandon held on for the win.
Kendall Lydon led MacEwan and all scorers with 30 points. The next leading scorer for the Griffins was Kayla Ivicak with six points.
The win gives Brandon a four-game winning streak, and five of their last six conference games.
The Griffins have now lost six in a row, and now sit with a record of 4-10.
The Bobcats will enjoy the confines of the BU Healthy Living Centre again next weekend as they welcome the Regina Cougars for a pair of games on Friday and Saturday.
The Griffins will enjoy a bye weekend before welcoming the Winnipeg Wesmen on February 27 & 28.
