The University of Winnipeg Wesmen Women's Basketball team remained unbeaten in regular season play after posting an 87-59 victory over the Brandon University Bobcats Thursday evening at the Dr. David F. Anderson Gymnasium in Winnipeg.
Winnipeg with the victory improves their record to a perfect 7-0. Brandon with the loss falls to 2-5.
Second year guard Lena Wenke had her best game so far this season scoring a game high 16 points. Fourth year guard Antoinette Miller added 14 points. Fifth year guard Kerri Kuzbyt just missed a double-double finishing with nine points and 10 rebounds while adding seven assists. Fellow fifth year guard Megan Noonan scored nine points, all on three point baskets.
Brandon was led by Lauren Anderson's 12 points. Mikaela Stanton added 11 while Keisha Cox finished with 10. Kinsley Ransom led the Bobcats on the boards with seven rebounds.
Winnipeg led 20-18 after the opening quarter but found some breathing room soon after. The Wesmen went on a 9-0 run in a two minute span to open up the second quarter to take a 29-18 lead. Bobcats forward Lauren Anderson nailed a jump shot to stop the run and pull the Bobcats deficit back to single digits at 29-20. Winnipeg went on to outscore Brandon 22-16 in the quarter to take a 42-34 lead into the half time break. The Wesmen connected on 7-of-13 (54%) from the field in the opening half. Lena Wenke and Kerri Kuzbyt led the Wesmen with seven points each.
Once again Winnipeg went on a run to open up their lead even further. A 9-0 run to start the third gave Winnipeg a 51-34 lead at the midway point of the frame. The Wesmen offense continued to roll, outscoring Brandon 21-8 to open up a commanding 63-42 lead after three quarters.
Winnipeg continued to roll in the fourth quarter outscoring Brandon 24-17 to close out the 87-59 victory.
The Wesmen had a huge advantage on the glass, out-rebounding the Bobcats 38-22.
The teams will conclude their home and home series Friday night in Brandon. Game time is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
