REGINA - Elgin Pearce scored his third and fourth goals of the weekend as the University of Regina men's hockey team fell 4-2 to the Calgary Dinos on Saturday afternoon in their final game of the 2016-17 Canada West season.
Mac Colasimone and Drydn Dow also had tallies for the Dinos, while Tyler Bell and Ian McNulty replied for the Cougars.
Mitch Kilgore stopped 29 shots in his final game with the Cougars, as the fifth-year goaltender is the lone Cougar to graduate from the program this season. Coleman Vollrath made 31 saves for the Dinos.
The Dinos were able to open the scoring at the 13:42 mark of the first period after some sustained pressure in the Cougar zone. A Cougar turnover resulted in Adam Kambeitz picking up the puck and finding Danny Gayle in front of Kilgore. Gayle flipped the puck over to Colasimone who netted a quick wrist shot upstairs.
The Cougars answered three minutes later after Jared Hauf was sent off for tying up Cody Fowlie. The Cougar powerplay worked the puck around the perimeter before Logan Harland sent it back to Bell. Bell ripped a slap shot from the point that found its way through traffic and beat a screened Vollrath to even the score. Tristan Frei picked up his eighth assist on Bell's fourth goal.
Just as it looked as though the two teams would head to the first intermission all square, Dow flipped a wrist shot towards the net from the blue line. The shot seemed to surprise Kilgore who was heavily screened, sailing over his blocker to put Calgary up 2-1 with just six seconds until the first intermission. Colasimone and Gayle picked up assists on the play.
Pearce continued to be a problem for the Cougars, following up his two-goal performance on Friday night with a goal in the second period to give the Dinos some insurance. Pearce took a feed and went up the right wing on a two-on-one, electing to shoot and beating Kilgore with a low wrist shot. Parker Bowles and Ryan Suchorab earned assists on Pearce's conference-leading 19th.
The Cougar powerplay got another chance after a Braiden Doucette interference call, and made the most of it as McNulty banged in a rebound in front after another big blast from Bell. McNulty's team-leading ninth goal came at the 14:48 mark and was also assisted by Landon Peel.
Any momentum the Cougars had was squashed as Pearce struck again off a broken rush in the Cougar zone. Bowles took a feed from Pearce and fed it back across to Pearce, but the puck hit a Cougar stick and stopped right in the slot. Pearce was the first one there and potted the puck into the open Cougar goal for his fourth of the weekend.
Regina came out flying in the third period, highlighted by a Dillan McCombie effort that saw him undress a Calgary defender before having his low shot stopped by the stick of a sprawling Vollrath. Nothing came of the initial pressure, and Kilgore was steady at the other end of the rink as the third period expired with no score.
The Dinos finish the season with an 18-9-1 record, good enough for third in the conference. The Cougars close the season at 3-22-3.
