Canada West Communications

To get you set for the latest weekend of Canada West men's basketball action, here are some storylines from around the conference in the latest edition of Free Throws.

Battle of 'Birds and Bears for Canada West supremacy

Len Catling, UBC Athletics

VANCOUVER - In games that could go a long way to defining the UBC Thunderbirds (9-1) 2016-17 regular season, the 'Birds play host to the Canada West leading Alberta Golden Bears (11-1) at War Memorial Gym.
The games tip off Friday, January 13th at 8:00pm PST and Saturday, January 14th at 7:00pm PST.
The two teams haven't met since early in November of 2015 when they split a weekend series at UBC to open their 2015-16 Canada West seasons.

No. 5 Dinos host Cascades for Pack the Jack

Lucas Meyer, Dinos Communications Assistant

CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos are looking to bounce back after a nail-biting loss Saturday night, as they host the Fraser Valley Cascades this week for the annual Pack the Jack event.
After losing to provincial rival Alberta by one point, the Dinos play the Cascades for the first time since the 2015 Canada West quarterfinals. UFV swept Calgary at home in the best-of-three series. The last time UFV played at the Jack was January 18th, 2013, where they lost to Calgary 88-84.

'Horns and Huskies square off in battle for playoff positioning

Pronghorns Athletics

LETHBRIDGE – For the second consecutive week, the Lethbridge Pronghorn men's basketball team hits the home floor at the 1st Choice Savings Centre and host the Saskatchewan Huskies in a clash with postseason implications on the line.

The 'Horns and Huskies hit the hardwood, Friday night at 8:00pm and Saturday at 7:00pm. Both games will also be streamed live on

Opening the second semester of conference action last week, the Pronghorns (8-4) held home court, sweeping the UNBC Timberwolves and enter the weekend on a four game conference winning streak. The two wins allowed the 'Horns to keep pace with the Winnipeg Wesmen for a tie for fourth place in the standings.
