Winnipeg, MB – The University of Manitoba Bison men's basketball had a second chance to come out on top over the #10 University of Alberta Golden Bears on Saturday, Nov. 26 evening at Investors Group Athletic Centre. The two teams played neck and neck, and at the end of the first half the opposing team only led with 35-33. Despite the tight score throughout the game, the Golden Bears came out on top 72-64.
This loss brings Manitoba to 2-6 Canada West conference record, while Alberta continues their winning streak and moves to a 8-0 mark.
After their ever-so-close 88-85 loss on Friday, the Herd gave the Golden Bears another run for their undefeated season status, with each period's score separated by no more than three points. The home team opened the game with a 10-2 run, with Bison co-captain Justus Alleyn netting 80% of the points.
The Herd fell behind in the fourth quarter with the Golden Bears' strong 5-0 run to start the quarter. The home team ultimately lost 72-64 after Alberta had a 21-16 scoring advantage in the fourth.
"I thought we got very individual in a certain stretch there where we played less team ball, and they kind of stuck with what they wanted to do," says Bison head coach Kirby Schepp, "they got higher quality shots down the stretch, and sometimes games come down to that."
Alleyn led overall scoring with 17 points, while Bison guard Keith Omoerah had a double-double, 10 points and 10 rebounds. Golden Bear forward Brody Clarke led the opposing team's scoring with 15 points and eight rebounds.
Both teams' next game day is on Thursday, December 1 — Manitoba will host Winnipeg while Alberta will host MacEwan.
