Ikomey scores career high in win over TRU

EDMONTON – Sophomore guard Ivan Ikomey was red hot from outside the arc, draining seven three-pointers to earn a career high 25 points which paced the University of Alberta Golden Bears basketball team to a narrow 82-79 win over the Thompson Rivers WolfPack on Friday night at the Saville Community Sports Centre.

NEED to know:  Ivan Ikomey scored a career high 25 points Game Star: Ivan Ikomey (AB) – 25 points, 7-three pointers Game Star: Luke Morris (TRU) – 20 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists Stat Line:  Golden Bears – FG: 30-58 (51.7%), 3PT: 15-29 (51.7%), FT: 7-11, 35 rebounds, 9 fouls, 16 assists, 14 turnovers, 4 blocks, 4 steals Wolfpack – FG: 33-71 (46.5%), 3PT: 12-32 (37.5%), FT: 1-2 (50%), 36 rebounds, 9 fouls, 14 assists, 12 turnovers, 1 blocks, 6 steals

Both teams let loose from outside the arc on Friday, shooting a combined 61 attempts from long distance, with Alberta draining 15 of their 29 attempts and TRU getting 12 of 32 to drop. Ikomey was simply lethal from distance, putting back seven of his eight shots, which led Alberta, while both Luke Morris and Derek Rhodes dropped four each to pace the WolfPack retaliation. Neither team got inside the paint enough on Friday night to draw foul shots, preferring to attack from outside, as TRU was awarded just two free-throws on the night, getting one to fall, while Alberta sank seven of 11 shots from the stripe.

Lyndon Annetts (3), Mamadou Gueye (2) and Geoff Pippus (2) all chipped in with multiple three-pointers for the home team, while Jeff Tubbs was the other member of the 'Pack to get more than one three-ball to fall, as the sophomore guard got two of his six shots to hit mesh.

The Golden Bears earned a slim 34-31 lead at the half, but exploded for 26 points in the third quarter, thanks to six three-pointers. But just as it looked like the Bears would waltz to their fifth straight win, the WolfPack suddenly got hot in the fourth.

Over the course of the final 10 minutes, TRU sunk six balls from long distance, while holding Alberta to three. Morris was a big factor in the fourth quarter push for Thompson Rivers, as was Mike Rouault who sunk his only trey in the fourth to tie the game up. Ikomey, however, continued to stay hot as well, sinking enough buckets to keep Alberta out in front. But, with the Bears up 82-79, and less than a minute to go, the WolfPack had an opportunity to tie with final possession. After a three-point miss by Annetts, TRU quickly turned the ball up court and got into the hands of Volodymyr Iegorov at the top of the arc. He sidestepped his man to put up the potential tying three-pointer, but rang it off the iron instead, leaving the Golden Bears with the win.

Iegorov finished the game with a double-double however, earning 14 points and 13 rebounds. Morris' 20 points paced the 'Pack offence, while Joe Davis chipped in with 18 points.

Outside of Ikomey's 25 points, Alberta got 19 from Gueye, while sophomore Brody Clarke added 13 points.

The win bumps Alberta's record to 5-0, while TRU falls to 1-4. The two teams will wrap up their two game series on Saturday night when they tip-off at 7:00 p.m. MST and live on canadawest.tv.
