NEW WESTMINSTER – Current BC Lion and former University of Calgary Dinos standout Mike Edem is the Canada West Football Alumnus of the month for October.
The defensive back registered 11 tackles during BC's five October games, as the Lions went 3-2 over the span to help secure home field advantage in this Sunday's CFL West Division Semi against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (1:30 p.m. PT - TSN).
For the season, Edem registered 37 defensive tackles and two interceptions for the Lions, who went 12-6 and secured second in the CFL's West Division.
Now in his fourth CFL season and first with the Lions, Edem played two years with the Dinos (2011 and 2012), winning Hardy Cup titles both seasons. Edem enjoyed a tremendous 2012 campaign with Calgary, earning the Canada West defensive player of the year award after leading the conference with 55 tackles, including 9.5 tackles for a loss.
After his two seasons at the Canada West level, Edem was selected third overall in the 2013 CFL Draft by the Montreal Alouettes and went on to become a CFL East Division All-star during his rookie season.
Edem's alma mater is looking to claim the conference championship this weekend, as the Dinos welcome the UBC Thunderbirds to McMahon Stadium (1 p.m. MT) for the 80th Hardy Cup in a rematch of last year's big game, which saw the 'Birds emerge victorious.
The game can be seen live on local Shaw TV, Shaw Direct 299, Shaw HD where available, Access Communications' channel 7/70, and CanadaWest.tv.
