Alberta Golden Bears volleyball
Tournament log: Friday, March 17 – 15 kills, six blocks, and three aces in 3-1 W vs. Manitoba in national QF / Saturday, March 18 – eight kills, four digs, and four blocks in 3-1 W vs. UBC in national SF / Sunday, March 19 – 16 kills, and four blocks in 3-1 L vs. Trinity Western in national final.
Fifth-year Alberta Golden Bears middle Taylor Arnett is the Canada West third star of the week after helping the Bears to a U SPORTS Men’s Volleyball silver medal, this past weekend in Edmonton.
As the host of the 2017 U SPORTS FOG Men’s Volleyball Championship, Alberta was able to capture their third national medal in four seasons, in large part due to the play of their veteran middle.
Arnett recorded 39 kills, 14 blocks, and eight digs over the three-day championship, earning a spot on the U SPORTS Tournament All-Star team.
The Faculty of Science student paced the Bears attack in their upset win over Manitoba in the quarter-final, finishing with a team-high 15 kills on just 29 attempts. Arnett was also crucial to the Bears middle-defence, scoring six of the Bears staggering 25 blocks.
Arnett carried that offensive efficiency into the semifinal, adding another eight kills and four blocks in a 3-1 win over UBC.
Despite a team-high 16 kills on Sunday from Arnett, the Bears couldn’t overcome a third Canada West opponent in three nights, dropping the final in four sets to the Trinity Western Spartans. Following Sunday’s final, Alberta and TWU have combined for each of the past four men’s volleyball championships.
